Nettie Owens

An Interview with Nettie Owens, CPO-CD®, creator of The Take Control Organizing System(TM)

How long have you been doing what you do and how did you get to be an organizing expert?

I have been organizing as a professional since 2004.  Although, I have always had an aptitude for systems and efficiency.  When I discovered that this could become a career, I began researching, reading and training through professional organizations, such as NAPO and the Institute for Chronic Disorganization (ICD).  In 2014, I attained the designation of CPO-CD®  from ICD.  Over the years, I have found that life experience has been of the best lesson to prepare me for the organizing work I do.  Both working with clients and handling my own family and business have taught me lessons, required me to research, read and innovate in ways that no textbook could provide.

The breakthrough moment for me was when, because of my organizing research and experience and my knowledge of challenging disorganization, I was able to identify challenges with my young children.  These concerns would have easily been misconstrued as ‘bad behavior’ in previous generations but were instead diagnosable conditions.  I was able to create a better environment for them and support their needs and use what I had learned to further support my clients.

I think there is something new to be learned every day.

Who are your clients exactly? Our clients are people who are overwhelmed and looking for solutions for too many possessions, not enough space, time management and low productivity.  They are mainly women but we also work with men.  Our clients are typically professionals and givers, often active in their communities. They are having a difficult time finding a balance they are comfortable with regarding their space and time. Many of our clients say that organizing and difficulties with it have been a problem for as long as they can remember. They may be embarrassed to have people over.  They have tried other organizing solutions.  They are often in the ‘sandwich’ generation caring for both parents and children.

How are you different from other “organizers”? At Sappari Solutions, we believe that the each person has the power to solve their own problems. But in many cases, they need a guide to help them identify the best path forward, walk with them on the path, and then teach them to take and maintain control of the situation.  When a person works with a Sappari Solutions Organizer she retains full control of all decisions and we maintain full confidentiality for the work.  Our organizers undergo rigorous and continual training to ensure that we have the best information and resources to share.  In addition, we have been doing this for a long time allowing us a wide breadth of experience that can only come from working with hundreds of clients.

What type of personality do you work best with and what is expected of me? The most successful person is the one that recognizes the need for change, is willing to look at the situation as it is, and work hard to develop new habits and systems for lasting change.  You do not need to know where to start or how to get to your goal, you just need to be willing to try and ready to take a step forward.

Who is this program NOT going to work for? The Take Control System is not going to work for a person that wants a quick makeover. It will not be optimal for those that prefer to have others provide a service that improves the space temporarily but does not provide a framework for lasting change.

What exactly is The Take Control System and what does it include?

The Take Control System is a proven system, a series of ten modules that engages the client in step by step process progressing from identifying the issues and source of those challenges, defining a vision and where to begin, setting goals, working through the project, learning how to organize and finally creating new habits to maintain the change. It includes tools for self-discovery, worksheets, questionnaires and processes that apply the knowledge from the modules to the client’s unique situation.

Can I contact some of your former clients to see what it’s like to work with you? Absolutely! Begin by checking out the results others have experienced here.

How quickly can I expect results? The time that it takes to see results depends on the size and complexity of the project, and the amount of time and effort that can be devoted to it. Most people start to begin to see a shift after completing two or three modules.  Remember, your journey is your own and may take more time or less than the stories that we have shared.  Invest yourself in the modules, activities and meetings with your organizer and you will achieve the results you are seeking.

How can I guarantee that will be able to take control of my space and time? Will I recover the investment I put into this program? The investment of time and money will yield results if you are willing to complete the modules, assignments and work with your organizer.  It is likely you have already tried other organizing systems or services.  It is important to your success to complete this program from start to finish in order to see lasting change.  But, your disorganization is likely costing you as well.  Use this article to find out just how much.

How long is the Take Control System program? The program consists of ten modules delivered bi-weekly over six months.   You may find that you need or want more time with your organizer, if so you may choose to continue for another six months at a time until you are satisfied with the results.  For as long as you are in the program, you will remain in the community with access to the system and membership site and tools, the Facebook group, weekly calls, and monthly meetings.

Do people ever re-up? People often start the program with one project in mind, finish that project and then find that they want to turn their attention to another area of their lives that they would like to improve. You can then enroll in the program that suits the project best as many times as you need to.  The Take Control System will be delivered either all at once, weekly for three months or bi-weekly for six months. You will remain in the community with access to all of the modules, the membership site and tools, the Facebook group, monthly meetings and more, as long as your are enrolled.

I have a family and a busy life. Although I want change badly, I don’t have much time to
spare. How much time do I need? One of the most important aspects of the program is to learn better time management, as you progress through that modules you will find that you have more time than you think!  You will be expected to commit to attending the weekly phone sessions in addition to the modules which require about 1 hour of time for each.
